A wedding is one of the most important events in a person’s life, and for one couple in Alabama, the day of their nuptials was made more memorable when the groom rescued a drowning teen.
Zac and Cindy Edwards were holding a beach wedding at Orange Beach on Aug. 2. When they were taking photos after the ceremony, a woman came up to ask for help.
“A lady had come up to us and said that guy is out there struggling. He can’t get back, he’s having a hard time,” Cindy told Fox10.
“We all turned and looked, and you could see he was pretty far out, you could see the look on his face, he was worried,” 37-year-old Zac told PEOPLE. “Cindy knew what I was thinking, and she said, ‘Go get him.’”
Red flags were flying up that day, but some swimmers didn’t heed the warning. First responders were already busy helping another struggling swimmer, so Zac took it upon himself to save the man. He quickly began to remove his clothes, but time was getting critical.
“[Cindy] said don’t worry about your pants, just go,” Zac, who is a former lifeguard and a coast guardsman, said in an interview with ABC News. “See, you’ve got to listen to your wife because otherwise, you’re in trouble.”
Zac got a boogie board from a 17-year-old who was nearby and swam out in the rough waters. Luckily, he reached Jamie Robinson, 18, in time as the young teen was losing his strength.
“He kept saying, ‘I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe,’” Zac recounted to Pensacola News Journal. “My goal was to keep his head out of the water.”
Zac put Robinson on the boogie board and tried to swim back to shore, but he was met with strong currents and was unable to make it back. Fortunately, first responders arrived to help the two.
As soon as Zac reached the beach, he was “right back into wedding mode.”

It was fortuitous that the Edwardses’ wedding was held at the beach that day. Their pastor suggested for the wedding to be a day later, PEOPLE reported. If the couple had taken the advice, Zac would not have been there to save Robinson.
“God had a plan, and everything fell into place,” Zac said.
